Prime Minister Andy Burnham faces calls for snap election and new art exhibition

TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak has suggested that Prime Minister Andy Burnham could potentially call a snap election to implement significant left-wing economic changes. Nowak indicated that the Prime Minister might seek to move beyond the fiscal constraints of the 2024 Labour manifesto to deliver a 10-year plan that includes a wealth tax on firms, increased taxes on the financial sector, and the insourcing of public services.

While Chancellor John Healey has characterized the current administration as a period of continuity for the Labour Party, Nowak argues for more aggressive measures regarding workers' rights and employment protections. This comes as the government prepares for its first Budget next month.

In a separate development, artist Peter Davis is set to feature a portrait of Prime Minister Burnham, titled ‘The B’s of Manchester’, in an upcoming art exhibition at the Art of Protest Gallery in York. The exhibition, titled ‘Art You Can Hear’, explores the intersection of music and visual culture and is scheduled to run from September 17 to October 7, 2026.
