Alberta voters decide on path toward potential independence referendum

Albertans are heading to the polls to vote on a referendum that could initiate the legal process for a future binding vote on provincial independence. The ballot includes ten questions: nine addressing immigration, provincial powers, and constitutional reforms, and a tenth asking whether the province should remain part of Canada or begin the legal steps toward a future separation referendum.

Premier Danielle Smith, who opposes independence but called the referendum to allow public expression, has noted that polls suggest only about 22 per cent of residents support secession. Conversely, separatist advocates argue the vote is necessary to address economic grievances related to resource control and federal environmental regulations.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has campaigned heavily in Alberta, urging citizens to vote for national unity and warning that a separatist movement could lead to long-term economic and political instability. More than 1.35 million Albertans, representing approximately 43 per cent of eligible voters, have already cast advance or special ballots.
