Prime Minister Narendra Modi strengthens India‑Australia strategic, energy and sports ties in Melbourne

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Melbourne from 8–10 July 2026 for the third India‑Australia Annual Leaders’ Summit. He met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Governor‑General Samantha Mostyn, opposition leader, and the Indian diaspora, addressing a crowd of about 30,000 at Marvel Stadium.

During the visit the two sides signed a series of memoranda of understanding covering maritime security, defence, civil nuclear energy and critical minerals. A key breakthrough was the signing of an administrative arrangement that enables Australian uranium exports to India for peaceful nuclear use, paving the way for private contracts despite earlier reporting‑related hurdles. The partnership also embraced renewable energy, green hydrogen and other emerging technologies.

Economic cooperation was highlighted by AustralianSuper’s commitment of AUD 500 million to India’s National Investment and Infrastructure Fund, and agreements to open eight Australian university branch campuses in India, along with scholarship programmes. The leaders reaffirmed work on a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement and a bilateral investment treaty.

Sporting ties were celebrated at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where Modi presented a historic photo to former Australian captain Steve Waugh and, together with Albanese, launched an India‑Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap. The roadmap aims to expand joint training, sports science, youth festivals and a future BBL match in Chennai, underscoring sport as a pillar of the bilateral relationship.
