Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscores India‑Seychelles partnership in the Indian Ocean

On 28 June 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the National Assembly of Seychelles, describing the Indian Ocean as a conduit that links, rather than separates, India and Seychelles. He recalled historic contacts dating to the 1770 arrival of the ship Telemac and emphasized that the relationship has been built by “people, families and generations” – "हमारे रिश्ते केवल सरकारों ने नहीं बनाए, बल्कि लोगों, परिवारों और पीढ़ियों ने इन्हें मजबूत किया है।"

Modi highlighted cultural ties, noting how samosas and chutney have become symbols of the shared heritage – "समोसा और चटनी ... हमारी सांस्कृतिक जड़ें" – and praised Seychelles’ diverse population as its greatest strength. He affirmed continued defence cooperation, recalling Indian Navy ships that visited Seychelles at its independence in 1976 and subsequent anniversaries, and pledged ongoing collaboration to ensure security, prosperity and stability in the region.
