Prime Minister Takaichi faces criticism over Japan-US diplomacy and PR tactics
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is facing criticism regarding her diplomatic conduct and the transparency of her administration's communications following a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Former lawmaker Ichiro Ozawa criticized the Prime Minister for failing to hold a joint press conference with President Trump, suggesting that the lack of a shared forum makes the Prime Minister's subsequent reports on the meeting unilateral and unreliable. Ozawa expressed concern that this trend is damaging Japan's international standing.
Simultaneously, the Cabinet Public Relations Office has come under fire for posting a composite image on social media that depicts Takaichi and Trump smiling at one another. Observers noted the image appeared to be a manufactured “cut-and-paste” job, intended to project a level of rapport that contradicted eyewitness accounts of the actual meeting. This controversy coincides with reports of a significant increase in requested government public relations budgets, which are projected to reach approximately 35 billion yen.
