Marília Mendonça biopic cast unveiled as Prime Video begins filming

Prime Video announced the full cast for its upcoming biographical film "Marília," chronicling the life of Brazilian sertanejo star Marília Mendonça. Filming is set to start in July, with Marina Versos playing the titular singer. The ensemble includes Hermila Guedes as her mother Dona Ruth, Klara Castanho as singer Maiara, Sophia Valverde as Maiara’s partner Maraisa, Marcelo Serrado as manager Wander Oliveira, Daniel Haidar and Lucas Oliver as the duo Henrique & Juliano, and João Guilherme as composer Juliano Tchula, among others. The project, directed by Dainara Toffoli and scripted by Carina Schulze and Patrícia Andrade, is produced by Chatrone and Gullane and will also be accompanied by a documentary series titled “Marília Mendonça: Sentimento Louco.”

Composer Juliano Tchula, who co‑wrote many of Mendonça’s hits, publicly stated that he does not consent to his likeness being used in the film and has engaged lawyers to block any portrayal. His objections were echoed in separate statements that he also declines any financial compensation linked to the production. Despite this, the film proceeds, with a planned release slated for 2027.

Cast members have expressed enthusiasm on social media. Klara Castanho highlighted the honor of portraying Maiara and hopes audiences will be moved by the project, while the lead actress Marina Versos emphasized her commitment to honoring Mendonça’s legacy. The biopic represents Prime Video’s second Amazon‑backed tribute to the late singer.
