Emmy Awards to move to Prime Video in historic six-year streaming deal

The Television Academy has signed a six-year agreement with Amazon to move the Emmy Awards from traditional broadcast television to Prime Video. Starting with the 2027 ceremony, the awards will be streamed exclusively on the platform.

This deal ends the decades-long “Wheel Deal” rotation, which saw the broadcast of the ceremony alternate among major US networks ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC. The transition to streaming follows a broader industry trend, as seen with the Oscars moving to YouTube in 2029.

In a significant move for accessibility, the ceremony will be streamed live and for free worldwide, meaning viewers will not require an Amazon Prime subscription to watch. The agreement is expected to reach audiences in more than 240 countries and territories. While official financial terms were not disclosed, industry reports estimate Amazon will pay between $15 million and $25 million annually for the global rights, a notable increase from the previous broadcast network fees estimated at $8 million to $10 million.
