Live entertainment shift to streaming platforms

Overview

The Television Academy has entered a six-year agreement with Amazon to move the Emmy Awards from traditional broadcast television to Prime Video. Beginning with the 2027 ceremony, the awards will be streamed exclusively on the platform. This transition ends the decades-long “Wheel Deal” rotation among major US networks ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC.

Under the terms of the deal, the ceremony will be streamed live and for free worldwide to audiences in more than 240 countries and territories, meaning viewers will not require an Amazon Prime subscription. While official financial terms remain undisclosed, industry reports estimate Amazon will pay between $15 million and $25 million annually for the global rights.

The shift of the Emmy Awards is part of a broader industry trend where major live entertainment and sporting events are moving toward streaming services. Other notable transitions include the Oscars moving to YouTube in 2029 and Disney+ incorporating the broadcast of Super Bowl LXI in February 2027 alongside ESPN.
