Spanish prisons face scrutiny over violence and mistreatment allegations

Concerns regarding prison safety and human rights are mounting in Spain following reports of violence and allegations of mistreatment. At the Brians 2 prison, three officials were injured during an incident where an inmate attacked them with a chair and physical strikes while being transferred between modules.

Simultaneously, the Association for Human Rights of Andalusia (APDHA) has called for independent investigations into several Andalusian prisons, including Huelva, Algeciras, and Puerto III. This follows a report from the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) which highlighted testimonies of physical abuse by penitentiary staff, such as punches and kicks, often occurring in areas lacking video surveillance. APDHA noted that structural deficiencies in investigation and documentation processes make it difficult for inmates to report abuses without fear of retaliation.
