Prisoner chaplaincy group faces verbal abuse in Santiago

Approximately 200 individuals from 23 Spanish penitentiaries arrived in Santiago after completing the Camino pilgrimage. They were accompanied by officials and volunteers from the Pastoral Penitenciaria.

Upon reaching the Obradoiro, the group was met with shouts of “Fóra fascistas das nosas rúa” (Out with the fascists from our streets). The protesters, who were camping in the area to advocate for housing rights, targeted the group due to the presence of Spanish flags and t-shirts bearing the phrase “Dios te ama” (God loves you).

The incident has raised concerns regarding the use of ideological labels to deny respect in public spaces, particularly toward individuals attempting to reintegrate into society after periods of marginalization or incarceration.
