Spanish prison pilgrimage and subsequent protest

Overview

Under the ‘Caminos de Libertad’ project, inmates from various Spanish penitentiaries, including the Segovia Penitentiary Center, participated in a week-long pilgrimage along the French Way of the Camino de Santiago. The initiative, promoted by the Segovia Penitentiary Pastoral and the Spanish Episcopal Conference, aimed to foster personal reflection and reintegration through a 166-kilometer walk toward the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral.

Upon the group’s arrival in Santiago, approximately 200 participants from 23 different penitentiaries were met with verbal abuse from local protesters. Demonstrators camping in the Obradoiro area shouted “Fóra fascistas das nosas rúa” (Out with the fascists from our streets), targeting the group due to the presence of Spanish flags and clothing featuring the phrase “Dios te ama” (God loves you).
