Prisoner escapes from Trapani's Pietro Cerulli facility

A 34-year-old inmate escaped from the Pietro Cerulli prison in Trapani around 4:00 AM. The individual, who was born in Italy but of foreign origin, was held alone in a cell within the 'Mediterraneo' wing under the 14-bis regime.

The escape was carried out by drilling a hole in a wall leading to an external area of the pavilion, after which the inmate climbed over the perimeter wall. Following a search involving municipal police and Carabinieri, prison police located and recaptured the man near a level crossing on via Marsala at approximately 7:00 AM.

Labor unions, including Sappe, Uil, and Sinappe, have commented on the incident. While praising the professionalism of the prison police, union representatives highlighted structural concerns regarding the Mediterraneo wing. They cited issues such as dilapidated facilities and staffing shortages, noting that approximately 90 officers are responsible for supervising 570 inmates in the facility.
