Prisoner escapes in Italy
Overview
Recent incidents in Italian prisons have involved the escape and subsequent apprehension of inmates.
In September, a 40-year-old man serving a sentence for robbery at Trani prison was arrested in Ostuni after being missing since the previous August. The individual had failed to return to prison following a scheduled leave. His arrest followed a pursuit by plainclothes Carabinieri that involved a vehicle collision and a foot chase through a central area.
In October, a 34-year-old inmate escaped from the Pietro Cerulli prison in Trapani by drilling a hole in a wall. The individual, held under the 14-bis regime, was recaptured by prison police near a level crossing a few hours after the escape. Following the incident, labor unions raised concerns regarding structural issues and staffing shortages at the facility, noting that approximately 90 officers supervise 570 inmates.
