Private healthcare costs in Hungary rise faster than inflation

Private healthcare costs in Hungary are rising significantly faster than the national inflation rate. According to the NN Insurance 2026 Private Medical Price Index, the average cost for a specialist or basic diagnostic examination rose by 5% over the past year, reaching 30,724 HUF in August. This increase is notably higher than the 1.3% annual inflation rate reported by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) for the same period.

Despite the rising prices, more than half of Hungarians have utilized private healthcare services within the last two years. While costs are increasing, the impact on the average citizen's budget has slightly lessened because wage growth has outpaced medical inflation. A single examination now consumes approximately 7% of the median monthly net salary (438,000 HUF), down from 7.41% last year.

Price increases vary by service type. Laboratory tests saw the highest jump at 10%, followed by dermatology at 7.7% and gynecology at 6.7%. Conversely, ophthalmology and cardiac ultrasounds saw much smaller increases of 1.9% and 2.5%, respectively.

Regional price disparities persist, though the gap between Budapest and rural areas is narrowing. Specialist examinations in rural regions can be 7,000 to 15,000 HUF cheaper than in the capital. The most frequently used private services include dentistry (48%), gynecology and obstetrics (29%), and laboratory or dermatological services (22%).
