Private label brands reach 53.8% of Spanish household purchase volume
Private label brands have reached a significant milestone in Spain, accounting for 53.8% of the total volume of household purchases, excluding fresh products. According to data from Worldpanel by Numerator and an ALDI study, 57.7% of Spanish consumers report increasing their purchases of these brands over the last three years.
Economic factors are the primary drivers for this shift. Approximately 69.9% of consumers cite the quality-price relationship as the main reason for choosing private labels, followed by low prices (52.8%) and the pursuit of promotions (31.8%). Spain currently leads Europe in the expansion rate of private labels and holds the second-highest market share in Europe at 52%, trailing only the Netherlands.
Industry leaders at the Auténtica Premium Food event in Seville highlighted that the retail sector is undergoing a transformation driven by demographic shifts, including an aging population, smaller household sizes, and the unique shopping behaviors of Generation Z. To adapt, retailers are focusing on private labels, convenience, and technology, including artificial intelligence, to manage margin pressures and meet the demands of a more diverse and informed consumer base.
