Pro Asyl accuses German government of upgrading Taliban regime via visas
The human rights organization Pro Asyl has accused the German government of politically upgrading the Taliban regime following the entry of several Taliban representatives into Germany on visas.
Pro Asyl Managing Director Helen Rezene stated that issuing these visas opens a door to Europe and facilitates cooperation with a regime that terrorizes the Afghan population and systematically disenfranchises women and girls. The organization argues that the government is pursuing a policy of gradual normalization to facilitate deportations, effectively subordinating human rights to migration control.
Lars Castellucci, the German government's Human Rights Commissioner, warned against any actions that resemble the normalization or recognition of the Taliban regime without substantial human rights progress. While expressing understanding for the deportation of criminals, Castellucci emphasized that no individual should be returned to a country where their life or physical integrity is at risk, noting that courts must evaluate such cases individually.
