ProAmpac launches biotechnology-enhanced packaging to extend food shelf life
Flexible packaging manufacturer ProAmpac has introduced its ProActive Intelligence Shelf Protect (SP) Series, a new technology designed to reduce microbial growth and minimize food spoilage. Developed in partnership with biotechnology firm Copperprotek, the technology incorporates patented biotechnology directly into food-contact packaging films.
The SP range is intended for use with meat, seafood, and dairy products, including fresh beef, pork, cooked sausage, deli meat, salmon, and fresh cheese. According to the company, the technology helps preserve product quality during storage and distribution without altering the packaging's clarity, physical properties, or sealing performance.
While studies by food manufacturers and third-party laboratories have demonstrated extended shelf life for certain products, ProAmpac noted that effectiveness varies based on product type, processing conditions, initial microbial levels, and storage practices. The technology is being integrated into three existing formats: TruTite-SP-1000, ClearShield-SP-1000, and Envio-SP-1000 films.
