Developments in food packaging shelf life technology

Recent advancements in food packaging technology have focused on extending shelf life through both biotechnological and material science approaches.

In North America, ProAmpac, in partnership with biotechnology firm Copperprotek, has launched the ProActive Intelligence Shelf Protect (SP) Series. This technology incorporates patented biotechnology into flexible packaging films to reduce microbial growth and minimize spoilage in meat, seafood, and dairy products. The company noted that while the technology preserves quality during distribution, effectiveness depends on specific product types and storage practices.

Concurrently, researchers in Russia from Kabardino-Balkarian State University, along with collaborators from Dagestan State Pedagogical University and the Russian State University of Tourism and Service, have developed a model to calculate the gas permeability of polymers. By adding nanometer-sized solid particles to polymers to create composites, the researchers aim to create a ‘tortuous path’ that hinders the penetration of gases and moisture, thereby preventing food spoilage and metal oxidation.
