Probolinggo resident dies in accidental fire while burning waste

A 70-year-old local official, identified as Mutasan, died on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, after becoming trapped in a fire while attempting to extinguish a blaze on his property in Lambangkuning Village, Probolinggo Regency.

The incident began when the victim was burning dry bamboo leaves and waste on his land. Due to wind and dry materials, the flames grew rapidly, spreading to nearby gardens. The victim reportedly attempted to fight the fire alone using makeshift tools, but was overcome by smoke and flames.

Local authorities, including the Probolinggo Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and the Lumbang Village Head, noted that the victim had a history of respiratory issues. Medical teams from the Lumbang Health Center confirmed he died at the scene with severe burns. Police have secured evidence from the site, including a lighter and tools, as they continue to investigate the exact chronology of the event.
