Profeco mandates full disclosure of ticket fees in Mexico
Iván Escalante, head of Mexico’s Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco), stated that additional charges applied by ticket sales companies are only legal if they are disclosed to the consumer before payment is completed.
During a recent briefing, Escalante addressed concerns regarding unexpected fees, specifically mentioning Ticketmaster. He clarified that if a ticket is advertised at a certain price and additional costs appear after the transaction is finalized without prior notice, the company is in violation of consumer protection laws.
Profeco has implemented guidelines for mass concert ticket sales that require companies to disclose the total amount payable for each section. These regulations mandate that the advertised price must include taxes, commissions, interest, insurance, or any other costs. Any additional services must remain optional and require explicit consumer consent. Profeco continues to monitor ticketing companies to ensure compliance with these transparency standards.
