Profepa closes Tampico business for illegal crocodile meat sale

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has closed a business in Tampico, Tamaulipas, after discovering the illegal sale of crocodile meat. During an inspection on September 18, authorities seized 4.5 kilograms of Morelet's crocodile meat (Crocodylus moreletii).

Under Mexican environmental regulations (NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010), the Morelet's crocodile is a protected species. Selling its parts or derivatives requires specific authorization from Semarnat or competent state authorities. Profepa intends to file a complaint with the Attorney General's Office (FGR), as the illegal commercialization of such species can carry criminal penalties under the Federal Penal Code, including prison sentences of one to nine years.
