Profepa environmental enforcement actions in Mexico
Overview
The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has conducted enforcement actions against businesses in Veracruz and Tamaulipas for environmental violations.
In Cotaxtla, Veracruz, Profepa implemented a partial and temporary closure of a poultry farm after an inspection revealed that two modules were operating without required environmental impact authorization from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat). While the operator held municipal licenses, they lacked the necessary federal permits.
In Tampico, Tamaulipas, authorities closed a business following the discovery of illegal crocodile meat sales. During an inspection, officials seized 4.5 kilograms of Morelet's crocodile meat, a protected species under Mexican regulations. Profepa indicated it will file a complaint with the Attorney General's Office (FGR), as the illegal commercialization of such species may carry criminal penalties.
