Profepa seizes endangered margay in Oaxaca residence

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) seized an endangered margay (Leopardus wiedii) from a residence in the municipality of San Pablo Huitzo, Oaxaca. The seizure followed a report regarding the presence of the feline within a home.

During the inspection, no documentation was provided to prove the legal origin of the animal. The specimen is a nine-month-old female in apparent good health. Officials noted that the animal showed an “evident degree of habituation to human contact” and did not exhibit typical wild behavior during the seizure process.

The margay is listed as an endangered species under Mexican regulations and is included in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The animal has been transferred to a wildlife management facility in Pachuca, Hidalgo, for care and rehabilitation. Authorities will later determine if the feline is fit to be released back into its natural habitat.
