Mexican wildlife seizures and rescues

Mexican environmental authorities, led by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), have conducted operations to seize and rescue protected wildlife from private holdings.

In August, Profepa seized an endangered female margay from a residence in San Pablo Huitzo, Oaxaca. The nine-month-old animal, which showed an “evident degree of habituation to human contact,” was transferred to a facility in Pachuca, Hidalgo, for rehabilitation.

In September, authorities rescued two Bengal tigers—a two-year-old female and an eight-month-old male—in Coalcomán, Michoacán. The tigers were found in makeshift enclosures and exhibited signs of dehydration, obesity, and repetitive behaviors. This operation involved coordination with the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), the National Guard, and the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar). The tigers were moved to a management unit in Morelia for medical care.

In a subsequent operation in Múgica, the State Attorney General's Office rescued an adult male spider monkey from a residence in Nueva Italia. The primate was found restrained by a collar and leash without adequate food or water. Veterinary assessments revealed skin lesions and signs of human imprinting. The monkey has been placed under the care of the Morelia Zoo for observation and rehabilitation.
