Profepa shuts down illegal forestry operations in Campeche

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has suspended activities at two forestry establishments in the Mexican state of Campeche following the detection of illegal logging and charcoal production.

The first operation took place in the municipality of Calakmul at a storage and transformation center in the Concepción ejido. Authorities seized 72 logs of ciricote wood, totaling 16.5 cubic meters, after the operator failed to provide documentation proving the legal origin of the materials or the site's legal operation.

A second operation was conducted in the Valle Nuevo Mennonite settlement in Champotón, supported by security forces. Inspectors discovered a site used for illegal charcoal production that lacked proper legal accreditation. Seized items included 440 kilograms of charcoal, a trailer containing over eight cubic meters of wood, and various pieces of guayacán and chicozapote. Notably, the use of guayacán wood was identified; this species is classified as threatened under Mexican environmental regulations (NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010) due to its slow growth and risks from illegal logging.
