Profertil to propose US$ 2 billion plant expansion in Argentina

Profertil, Argentina’s largest fertilizer producer, plans to present a major expansion project for its Bahía Blanca plant under the RIGI framework before the end of the year. The expansion is expected to require an investment of approximately US$ 2 billion and will increase the facility's annual production capacity from 1,320,000 tons to 2,830,000 tons of nitrogenous fertilizers.

The project will rely on gas from the Vaca Muerta formation as its primary raw material for producing ammonia and granulated urea. A dedicated team of 50 professionals is currently working on base engineering and the refurbishment of the Ingeniero White pier and facilities, with an investment of over US$ 35 million already directed toward these preliminary stages. The construction phase is estimated to take four years.

Separately, Profertil reported a production milestone in August, reaching over 120,700 tons of granulated urea. This marks the highest production volume recorded for the month in the company’s 25-year history. Currently, Profertil covers approximately half of Argentina's national demand for nitrogenous fertilizers; the proposed expansion aims to meet 100% of domestic demand and enable exports to markets such as Brazil.
