Fertilizer industry investment in Bahía Blanca

Argentina is developing significant nitrogenous fertilizer production capacity in Bahía Blanca through large-scale industrial projects.

Profertil has initiated plans for a US$ 2 billion urea production facility, amending its corporate statutes to include the construction and management of such a plant. This project aims to utilize natural gas from the Vaca Muerta formation to supply domestic and regional markets, with the company evaluating entry into the Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI) to secure tax and legal benefits.

As of September 2026, Profertil intends to formally propose this expansion under the RIGI framework before the end of the year. The project is expected to increase the facility’s annual capacity from 1,320,000 tons to 2,830,000 tons of nitrogenous fertilizers. A dedicated team of 50 professionals is currently conducting base engineering and refurbishing the Ingeniero White pier and facilities, with over US$ 35 million already invested in these preliminary stages. The construction phase is estimated to last four years. This expansion aims to allow Profertil to meet 100% of Argentina’s domestic demand and facilitate exports to markets like Brazil.

Complementing this, Pampa Energía’s US$ 2.7 billion granulated urea plant project at the Port of Ingeniero White has been officially included in the RIGI. This facility is expected to reach a production capacity of 2.1 million tons of urea per year by late 2029. When combined with Profertil’s planned expansion, the total regional production capacity could reach approximately 4.9 million tons per year.
