Progreso, Mexico removes 816 kg of waste in coordinated beach cleanup
Over 600 volunteers gathered near the Centro de Estudios Tecnológicos del Mar in Progreso, Yucatán, for a beach‑cleaning event organized by the Secretaría de Desarrollo Sustentable (SDS) together with the Fundación GMA Limpiemos Yucatán, the Teletón Child Rehabilitation Center, the municipal government, Ecoce and Prolimpia. Participants collected a total of 816 kilograms of solid waste and removed 18 tires that posed a risk to the coastal ecosystem.
The haul included 705.9 kg of general trash, 39.3 kg of glass, 7.4 kg of PET containers, 63.2 kg of other materials and 0.2 kg of aluminium. SDS head Neyra Concepción Silva Rosado thanked volunteers, noting the action helps protect marine life, improves the port’s image and preserves recreational beach spaces for families and visitors.
