PROINVERSIÓN promotes USD 5.7 billion in Peru water projects

PROINVERSIÓN, an agency under Peru's Ministry of Economy and Finance, is promoting 17 water and sanitation projects valued at over USD 5.7 billion. These projects, to be awarded via public-private partnerships (APP) between 2026 and 2028, aim to benefit more than six million people across 11 regions. The portfolio includes drinking water systems, wastewater treatment plants, and desalination plants.

Nine specific projects are currently in the structuring or transaction phases, representing an investment of over USD 3.7 billion. Key projects include wastewater treatment plants in Trujillo, Huancayo, Cusco, and Cañete, as well as the Ilo desalination plant. These initiatives are intended to close essential service gaps and improve public health and environmental protection.

Separately, discussions regarding water access gaps have emerged following claims by Housing Minister Mauricio Arnillas that 8 million Peruvians lack potable water. However, data from the Institute for Economic Research (IPE) based on 2025 Census information estimates the gap at approximately 5 million people, representing roughly 17% of the population.
