Project CAPTURED wins EU ETS and IMO support for onboard carbon capture
Singapore's Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation announced that its Project CAPTURED has achieved two regulatory milestones. The CO₂ captured aboard a vessel in the pilot was formally recognised for compliance under the European Union Emissions Trading System, allowing verified captured tonnage to be deducted from emissions requiring EU allowances, provided the CO₂ is permanently bound in eligible products.
The International Maritime Organization gave in‑principle support to a proposal that recognises carbon mineralisation as a permanent storage pathway, complementing existing geological sequestration approval. The pilot demonstrated an end‑to‑end value chain: onboard capture, ship‑to‑ship off‑loading, over‑land transport and conversion of CO₂ into stable mineral products, maintaining purity above 99.95 % at all custody‑transfer points. It achieved a 7.9 % net greenhouse‑gas reduction at a 10.7 % gross capture rate, with an optimised value chain projected to deliver up to 17.8 % savings. Eleven partners, including Evergreen Marine and Zhoushan Dejin Shipping, collaborated on the project.
