Proper zucchini harvesting and storage keep produce fresh
Gardeners often see zucchini wilt within two days after picking because the fruit is torn from the plant by hand. Twisting the stem creates a wide, invisible wound that lets fungi and bacteria enter. Using a clean knife or small shears to cut the fruit, leaving a 2–3 cm peduncle, seals the cut and slows spoilage.
For storage, avoid washing the zucchini first. Keep the vegetables in a cool, shaded, well‑ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and plastic bags. This reduces moisture and delays decay.
An oversized zucchini also harms the plant’s productivity. The large fruit releases hormones that suppress flower formation on the same vine, lowering overall yield. Removing large fruits before they mature fully restores normal hormonal balance, allowing new flowers and smaller zucchinis to develop.
