ProRail awards Rotterdam rail yard redevelopment contract

ProRail has awarded VolkerRail a contract to redevelop the Waalhaven Zuid rail yard at the Port of Rotterdam. The project aims to increase capacity to accommodate longer freight and container trains, specifically up to 740 metres in length.

Scheduled to begin in late 2026 and run through the end of 2028, the redevelopment will include the installation of six tracks, 12 locomotive parking spaces, and infrastructure upgrades such as further electrification. The project also focuses on improving the separation of secured and unsecured areas to enhance safety and efficiency during shunting operations.

To manage the limited space and maintain freight services during construction, ProRail has reached agreements with the Municipality of Rotterdam and the Port of Rotterdam Authority to secure temporary working space. The project is receiving financial support from the European Commission.
