ProRail infrastructure developments in Rotterdam
Overview
ProRail is undertaking several infrastructure projects in the Rotterdam region to improve rail capacity and service accessibility.
In the Port of Rotterdam, ProRail has awarded VolkerRail a contract to redevelop the Waalhaven Zuid rail yard. Scheduled to run from late 2026 through 2028, the project involves installing six tracks and 12 locomotive parking spaces to accommodate freight and container trains up to 740 metres in length. The redevelopment also includes electrification and improved separation of secured and unsecured areas to enhance safety.
Separately, plans are being developed to transform the Rotterdam Stadion station into Rotterdam Stadionpark. Aiming to support residential growth in Rotterdam-Zuid, the project intends to increase service frequency to six or eight Sprinter trains per hour starting as early as 2034. This transformation will involve reducing the number of tracks from fifteen to seven and relocating freight tracks to the Maasvlakte. Proposed improvements include two island platforms and the ‘Stadsbalkon’, an elevated pedestrian and cyclist walkway designed to connect the Hillesluis neighborhood with the waterfront.
