ProRail plans major upgrades for Rotterdam Stadionpark station

ProRail is developing plans to transform the Rotterdam Stadion station into Rotterdam Stadionpark, aiming to increase service frequency and accessibility. Currently, train stops at the station are primarily limited to match days at De Kuip and special events. Starting as early as 2034, ProRail intends to implement a schedule of six Sprinter trains per hour, with the potential to increase this to eight.

The redesign is driven by the need to support significant residential growth in Rotterdam-Zuid, ensuring local residents have reliable public transport access on regular workdays. To accommodate the new station, the rail area will undergo substantial changes, including reducing the number of tracks from fifteen to seven. Freight tracks will be relocated to the Maasvlakte to free up space.

Infrastructure improvements will include the installation of two island platforms and the construction of a new pedestrian and cyclist connection known as the ‘Stadsbalkon’. This elevated walkway, situated eight meters above the tracks, will feature greenery and seating to connect the Hillesluis neighborhood with the waterfront. Additionally, a separate walkway will be provided to manage large crowds of supporters during events at De Kuip.
