Carlos Boulos dies after being struck by car in São Paulo traffic dispute

Carlos Boulos, an 80-year-old dentist and uncle of Guilherme Boulos, the Chief of Staff of the Presidency's General Secretariat, died on Tuesday in São Paulo. He had been hospitalized at Hospital das Clínicas since Saturday following a traffic dispute on Avenida 23 de Maio.

According to the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the incident began after a collision between Carlos's Toyota Hilux and a Fiat Palio. Witnesses reported that Carlos exited his vehicle to confront the other driver, at which point the Palio moved toward him, striking and running over him. Video footage of the incident helped police identify the vehicle.

The driver, identified as 61-year-old Amilton Juscelino Rodrigues, turned himself in to the police and provided a statement. He was indicted for intentional homicide. However, he was released following his testimony, as authorities cited restrictions under Article 236 of the Electoral Code that prevented a flagrant arrest.

The driver's defense, led by attorney Natan Tolintino, maintains that the driver did not intend to hit Carlos. The defense argues that the driver was attempting to flee a threatening situation to protect his wife and children after Carlos allegedly began honking and driving aggressively toward the family vehicle.
