Death of Carlos Boulos in São Paulo traffic dispute

Overview

Carlos Boulos, an 80-year-old dentist and uncle of Guilherme Boulos, the Chief of Staff of the Presidency’s General Secretariat, died in São Paulo following a traffic dispute on Avenida 23 de Maio.

The incident began when a collision occurred between Carlos Boulos’s vehicle and a Fiat Palio. Witnesses reported that Boulos exited his vehicle to confront the other driver, at which point the Palio moved toward him, striking and running him over. He was subsequently hospitalized at Hospital das Clínicas, where he passed away.

Police identified the driver as 61-year-old Amilton Juscelino Rodrigues. He has been indicted for intentional homicide, with some reports specifying qualified intentional homicide due to a futile motive. While the driver initially fled the scene, he later surrendered to authorities. He was released following his testimony, as authorities cited restrictions under Article 236 of the Electoral Code that prevented a flagrant arrest.

Defense attorneys maintain that the driver did not intend to hit Boulos, arguing he was attempting to flee a threatening situation to protect his family.
