Prospector 5 drilling rig sinks off Gabon coast

The Prospector 5 jack-up drilling rig, owned and operated by Borr Drilling, sank on the evening of October 24, 2026, near Mayumba, Gabon. The incident occurred at approximately 20:37 local time during preload jacking operations in the Dussafu Marin permit area while preparing for a drilling campaign for BW Energy.

Preliminary reports indicate the rig experienced a “punch-through” event, where a supporting leg abruptly penetrated the seabed, causing a loss of stability and the subsequent sinking. Of the 115 people on board, 110 were successfully rescued. One worker, an Indian national, has been confirmed dead, while four individuals remain missing. The missing personnel include three Gabonese nationals and one expatriate, identified by some reports as a Croatian national.

Gabon’s Ministry of Petroleum and Gas has activated a crisis response unit and ordered the navy to reinforce search and rescue operations. A technical investigation has also been ordered to determine the exact causes and responsibilities. BW Energy suspended production at the nearby MaBoMo facility as a precaution, though officials report no damage to the facility and no observed oil leakage or environmental pollution in the surrounding waters.
