Prospector 5 drilling rig sinking off Gabon

Overview

On the evening of October 24, 2026, the Prospector 5 jack-up drilling rig, owned and operated by Borr Drilling, sank near Mayumba, Gabon. The incident occurred during preload jacking operations in the Dussafu Marin permit area while the rig was preparing for a drilling campaign for BW Energy.

Preliminary reports suggest the rig experienced a “punch-through” event, where a supporting leg abruptly penetrated the seabed, causing a loss of stability. Of the 115 people on board, 110 were rescued. Authorities have confirmed one fatality, an Indian national, while four individuals—three Gabonese nationals and one expatriate—remain missing.

The Gabonese Navy is conducting search and rescue operations. The Ministry of Petroleum and Gas has launched a technical investigation into the structural collapse. While BW Energy suspended production at the nearby MaBoMo facility as a precaution, officials report no observed oil leakage or environmental pollution in the surrounding waters.
