Protein research highlights environmental benefits of plants and risks of overconsumption
Recent nutritional research highlights a shift in how protein sources are evaluated, focusing on health, cost, and environmental impact. Chris MacDonald, a researcher at the University of Cambridge and director of the Better Protein Institute, ranked 20 protein sources. The study found that plant-based options, such as tofu, chia seeds, and beans, significantly outperform animal products in terms of environmental sustainability, specifically regarding greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution, land use, and water consumption.
Simultaneously, scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison are questioning the trend of high-protein diets. A literature review published in Cell Press Blue, analyzing over 350 studies, suggests that excessive protein consumption may not be universally beneficial for maintaining muscle mass during aging. The research indicates that protein restriction could potentially improve metabolism, modify cellular responses to nutrients, and limit cellular damage, potentially contributing to a longer life for some individuals.
