Protein intake benefits muscle maintenance and metabolic health

Protein is a critical macronutrient for muscle maintenance, metabolic health, hormone production, and immune function. Experts suggest that high-protein diets, typically ranging from 1.2 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, can assist with weight loss, satiety, and the prevention of muscle and bone loss as individuals age.

Dietary experts recommend prioritizing high-quality sources such as lean meats, eggs, dairy, tofu, and lentils. Soy is highlighted as a particularly versatile plant-based protein because it is a complete protein containing all nine essential amino acids. Soybeans also provide fiber, potassium, and magnesium, which can help manage blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

While animal proteins are often more bioavailable, plant-based combinations like beans and rice can also meet nutritional needs. Incorporating smart food swaps, such as using Greek yogurt instead of sour cream or quinoa instead of rice, can help individuals increase their protein intake more easily.
