Protein intake requirements for athletes and the elderly
Protein intake requirements vary significantly based on activity levels and age. While the standard recommendation for adults is approximately 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, athletes may require up to 2 grams to support muscle building, recovery, and sustained energy.
High-quality animal sources, such as eggs, poultry, lean beef, dairy, and fish, provide all essential amino acids and high biological value. Plant-based athletes can also meet their needs through strategic combinations of foods like legumes.
Regarding aging populations, a meta-analysis by Dutch researchers suggests that increasing protein intake beyond the 0.8g/kg minimum may not provide significant health benefits for the general elderly population unless combined with regular exercise. While higher protein levels might positively impact muscle mass, the study found that increased muscle strength was only observed when higher protein consumption was paired with physical activity. This is particularly relevant due to anabolic resistance and sarcopenia, where aging muscles respond less efficiently to protein intake.
