Protests at Jantar Mantar over mosque demolitions lead to arrests
Thousands of people gathered at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to protest against the alleged targeting, demolition, and bulldozer actions against mosques and other places of worship across various parts of India.
The protest, organized by the Monitoring Committee of Indian Muslims, included participation from various Muslim organizations, social activists, lawyers, students, and citizens. Demonstrators demanded the protection of places of worship, religious freedom, and respect for constitutional rights. Leaders at the event emphasized that safeguarding religious sites is a fundamental responsibility of a democratic society.
Delhi Police detained several prominent figures during the demonstration, including Lok Sabha Members of Parliament Iqra Hasan, Ziaur Rahman Barq, and Mohibbullah Nadvi. Also among those detained were Malik Muhtashim Khan, Vice President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, and Abdul Hafeez, National President of the Students Islamic Organization. Organizers expressed concern over the detention of elected representatives and community leaders, stating that peaceful assembly and the right to dissent are essential democratic principles.
