Pakistan‑Occupied Kashmir protests surge as JAAC calls for mass rallies and India aid

The Jammu‑Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) has organized a series of large‑scale protests across Pakistan‑occupied Kashmir (PoK/PoJK) demanding the release of detained leaders, including Shaukat Nawaz Mir, and an end to what it describes as a military crackdown. More than 600 activists have been arrested, and at least one protester was killed after Pakistan Rangers opened fire, with several others injured.

JAAC leaders have appealed for humanitarian assistance from India, with Sardar Aman stating, “We need India’s help,” and urging the opening of the Line of Control to allow the flow of food and medicines. Activists also called for a boycott of the regional elections scheduled for 27 July, citing drone surveillance and excessive force.

International human‑rights groups, including Amnesty International, have condemned the Pakistani authorities for labeling JAAC a proscribed organisation and for using live fire and shelling against peaceful demonstrators. Diaspora protests were held in London, Auckland and other cities, drawing further global attention.

The unrest follows a month‑old ban on JAAC and reflects escalating tensions between Pakistan’s security forces and Kashmiri civil society, with potential repercussions for Indo‑Pakistani relations and regional stability.
