Protests erupt in Southampton after death of 18‑year‑old Henry Nowak

On Tuesday night in Southampton, England, hundreds gathered after 18‑year‑old Henry Nowak died from injuries inflicted by Sikh man Vickrum Digwa. Digwa, who claimed the attack was racially motivated, was sentenced earlier this week to 21 years in prison for the murder.

Demonstrators, some organized by far‑right activist Tommy Robinson, marched from the central police station toward Digwa’s residence. Police blocked their progress, resulting in violent clashes, at least two arrests and the use of force.

Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood and Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence, echoed the victim’s family’s request that the tragedy not be politicised, and pledged full cooperation with the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The IOPC’s investigation will conclude in three months, and the National Police Chiefs’ Council said it will review policing guidelines.
