Petropavlivska-Borshchagivka protests erupt over alleged torture chamber

Protests broke out in Petropavlivska-Borshchagivka, a suburb of Kyiv, following viral claims of a clandestine torture chamber used to hold men who evaded military conscription. The incident was sparked by Valentyna Moloda, a 49-year-old nurse who arrived at a recruitment dormitory in an ambulance bearing the logo of a private medical company that reportedly ceased operations in 2023.

Moloda, who has never been authorized to practice as a paramedic, claimed that armed individuals were allegedly torturing 40 people inside the building and that one man had already died. These claims led to an impromptu rally where a crowd of approximately 500 people gathered. Protesters clashed with law enforcement officers, throwing eggs and tomatoes at the building, with confrontations lasting until midnight.

Ukrainian authorities are investigating the event, describing it as a potential provocation. While police deny the existence of a secret prison, the incident has highlighted existing tensions regarding mandatory mobilization and the conduct of conscription officers under martial law.
