Military detention allegations in Petropavlivska Borshchahiv

Overview

Protests erupted in Petropavlivska Borshchahivka, a suburb of Kyiv, following reports that a private house was being used as an unofficial military prison. Allegations surfaced that between 25 and 40 people, including mobilized soldiers and suspected deserters, were being held and tortured in the building’s basement. Medical personnel and eyewitnesses reported seeing individuals with signs of beatings, leading to the evacuation of four seriously ill individuals to a hospital. One report specifically alleged that a 14-year-old boy was beaten with a shovel.

As the situation escalated, nearly 100 protesters gathered, resulting in clashes with guards and damage to a National Guard bus. Protesters also confronted Kyrylo Budanov, head of the President’s Office, during the unrest. Authorities have denied allegations of illegal detention and fatalities. National Guard Commander Oleksandr Pivnenko stated the property was a temporary deployment point, and the 1st Azov Brigade confirmed it serves unit 3121. Following the escalation, the State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) launched a criminal inquiry. Budanov characterized the incident as a “staged propaganda operation,” alleging a woman disguised herself as a paramedic to provoke the confrontation.

Newer reports indicate the protests grew significantly, with a crowd of approximately 500 people gathering to protest claims of a clandestine torture chamber used to hold men evading military conscription. During these rallies, protesters reportedly clashed with law enforcement and threw eggs and tomatoes at the building. Valentina Molodaya, identified as a 49-year-old nurse who allegedly arrived at a recruitment dormitory in an ambulance from a defunct medical company, has been detained without bail. Ambulance driver Viktor En has also been jailed pending trial. Prosecutors continue to characterize the site as a military location.
