Protests in over 300 U.S. cities demand justice for migrants killed by ICE

More than 300 cities across the United States staged coordinated demonstrations to demand accountability for migrants who have died while in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. Organizers carried 73 cardboard coffins through downtown Los Angeles as part of a national day of mourning that included actions in roughly 330 communities.

The protests were sparked by the recent shootings of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican father of three who was killed by an ICE officer on July 7 in Houston, Texas, and Johan Sebastián Guerrero, a Colombian man shot on July 13 in Biddeford, Maine, while confronting officers. Activists highlighted that 53 migrants have died in ICE detention since President Trump took office, 33 of them in the current fiscal year. Speakers, including Guillermo Torres of the religious group Clérigos y Laicos Unidos por una Justicia Económica (CLUE), called for greater transparency from the Department of Homeland Security, the release of detainees, and an end to the agency’s raid tactics.
