US ICE killings protest movement widens

Entities: Clérigos y Laicos Unidos por una Justicia Económica (CLUE) · Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) · United States · Johan Sebastián Guerrero · Lorenzo Salgado Araujo

Overview

The wave of vigils and demonstrations that began in late July 2026 has continued to expand nationwide. On July 25 more than 330 communities gathered to demand justice for immigrants killed by ICE, focusing on the recent shootings of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston and Johan Guerrero in Maine. Organizers called for the release of witnesses, independent investigations, an end to local ICE cooperation, and broader immigration reform.

The following day coordinated vigils in Pasadena, California, and at the Nevada State Capitol mourned the 75 people who have died in ICE‑related actions since January 2025, labeling the killings “fascism” and urging an “ICE‑out” stance ahead of the midterm elections.

On July 26 the movement entered a day of mourning in over 300 cities, with activists carrying cardboard coffins through downtown Los Angeles and staging similar actions across the country. Speakers reiterated that 53 migrants have died in ICE custody since the Trump administration began, 33 of them in the current fiscal year, and pressed for greater DHS transparency, the release of detainees, and an end to raid tactics. The protests show sustained, coordinated pressure for accountability and policy change as the election cycle approaches.
