Protests organized in Argentina and Chile following deaths of young children
In Argentina, family and supporters of two-year-old Julián Emiliano Benítez have organized a march for November 13 to demand justice. Benítez died on October 13 in Lomas de Zamora after being struck by a police vehicle during a pursuit of two motorcycle suspects. The collision involved a Dodge 1500 in which the child was traveling with his father. An officer has been charged with aggravated involuntary manslaughter and breach of official duties, though the accused remains free pending forensic results.
In Chile, the family of two-year-old Derek is protesting the lack of answers from the Aysén Health Service following his death on October 7 in Villa Cerro Castillo. The child's mother and grandmother have met with health officials to report alleged irregularities in medical care and expressed frustration over unmet deadlines for autopsy reports and legal medical findings. While the family claims a lack of concrete responses, the director of the Aysén Health Service, Juan Pablo Bravo Quintana, stated that the institution has addressed the points raised by the community.
