Proton and Perodua Secure 67% of Malaysia’s Car Market in H1 2026
The Malaysian Automotive Association reported total vehicle registrations of 385,353 units in the January‑June 2026 period, a 3 % rise from the same half‑year in 2025. Domestic manufacturers Proton and Perodua together sold 256,304 vehicles, lifting their combined market share to about 67 %—up from 63 % a year earlier.
Foreign‑branded cars registered 129,049 units, with their market share slipping to roughly 33 % from 37 % in 2025. Production in the sector also increased modestly, with total output rising 1.2 % to 356,946 units. Passenger‑vehicle output grew 1 % to 336,031 units, while commercial‑vehicle production rose 11 % to 20,915 units, despite a decline in commercial‑vehicle sales of 11 %.
Industry officials highlighted the surge in sport‑utility‑vehicle demand, noting a 19 % jump driven in part by new electric models from Proton and fresh launches by local manufacturers. "The momentum is continuing and our target is realistic," said Mohd Shamsor Mohd Zain, president of the Malaysian Automotive Association.
